Soldering with Youth at the Wende Museum

CRASHers gave back to the community last week, helping local museum The Wende and Hack Club teach youth to solder their very own dolphin badges.

Per organizer Angelina, “Teaching soldering to kids is important to me because I want to ensure that young generations of engineers get early exposure to learning STEM skills in a hands on and applied environment”, she also added “I think educating youth is a fantastic modality to get truly better at understanding what you are teaching. It requires you to be capable of conveying subjects at a fundamentally intuitive level.”

CRASHer Mariam agreed, telling CRASH Space “one of the girls I was helping said she wanted to be an engineer. I really wish someone had pushed me towards engineering as a kid and it made me happy to be able to represent women in tech even though I’m only a hobby-level engineer.”

Fellow member Theo also mentioned “Hearing how many of the students wanted to continue soldering or bring kits for siblings at home made the class feel even more worth it.”

Do you have a high school student interested in electronics? They may love Hack Club’s OnBoard Grant Program, an initiative where Hack Club will print any circuit board designed by a teen. Before printing, high schoolers can also learn how to design their own circuit boards from scratch with Hack Club tutorials and jams. Have questions? Check out the Hack Club Slack for answers!
