April Fools Easy Wifi Prank

Introduction: The Setup

While Barb was off teaching the youth of tomorrow not to blindly trust authority, I was brewing a prank of my own, utilizing April 1st and April Fools day as the perfect time to do it.

It is a common rite of passage when visiting someone’s home to ask for their WiFi password. So, to “help” make this process easier and more introvert-friendly, I decided to create a solution for my friends, without telling them of course

The Creation: A Simple WiFi Sign

Now my friends know I do 3D Printing, so I decided to use my skillset of Google and slicer software to plant the solution.

The result was a 3D-printed angled sign with a QR code prominently displayed on the front, accompanied by bold “WiFi Code” lettering, inviting curious people.

The sign in question before being planted, unassuming, contrast-y, proudly standing in pure PLA, emblazoned with the pixel positioning of the QR code.

The Prank: The Classic Rickroll

When unsuspecting users scan the QR code with their cameras, they are immediately greeted by none other than Rick Astley himself, serenading them with Never Gonna Give You Up.

While I didn’t catch anyone live falling for it, I can only imagine the support the next curious visitor would gain as they are reminded they will never be let down, nor deserted.

How To Create: Materials Needed and Project LinkWifi QR code (Rickroll) by VarthDader

If you’re inspired to prank your own friends, here’s everything you need:

  • Materials:
    • Generic PLA filament
  • Printing Specifications:
    • 0.4mm nozzle
    • Standard slicer settings (no supports required)
  • Tools:
    • Any 3D printer
      • Note: no multimaterial system is needed. If using a stock printer, only the first 3 layers are dual color. I would suggest using a modifier cube with a filament color override on layer 2 and 3 to only require 1 material swap.
  • Creation time
    • 54 minutes
Note: The front of the QR code is pointed downwards, so take that into account if you want a custom texture for your "face"

Final Thoughts: A Celebration of Foolery

Remember, this prank works year-round—not just on April Fools Day! Hope you all enjoyed your April foolery as much as I did! If you try this prank yourself, feel free to share your experiences.
