Not bad for a first print and no tweaking of settings.

There are actually three MakerBots in the space at the moment, and we had to borrow the Plastruder from one of the others to print, thanks to a cracked retainer plate in the Crash Space Plastruder.

Following up on discussions from our mailing list about the need for a Magical Soldering Unicorn I’ve gone ahead and drafted a first version prototype of what this might look like. I took the liberty of selecting purple sparkles as the colorway, though the final decision on that could certainly be changed before production. The value of something like this is pretty obvious and I expect this to be just the first in an ongoing series of Crash Space sponsored Magical Unicorns.

What do we do at our usual Tuesday night meeting? A brief bit of CrashSpace business. A show and tell session by our members. Lots of interesting parts and projects show up. Finally, there’s Take Apart Tuesday. The group takes apart a couple pieces of hardware and figures out what’s inside them, how they work, and what parts might be useful to scavenge.

Last night the folks at Veggie Grill were kind enough to donate some food for our big monthly meeting. They hooked us up with tons of Chicken Burgers and Carrot Cake which our team plowed through. Oh yeah, and it was all vegan. Oh yeah, and everyone loved it. THANKS!!

We’re dead set on getting a MakerBot for the space and to help further these efforts have put up a Pledgie campaign where people can chip in a little cash to help make this a reality. If you’d like to make a donation, we’d be your best friend. Really.

We’re LIVE!

This weekend saw our first “real” event with the MakerBot MakeIn. Lots of people came by and MakerBots were built from scratch.

Jerry posted a ton of photos and I’ll try to get him to make a post here talking about how it all went down. Regardless it was a huge success and we were all delighted that so many new folks from in town and old folks from out of town were able to swing by and join us.

Additionally we’ve discovered some absolutely amazing Indian food not 2 blocks from the space, which I suspect will quickly become our regular feasting place.

We also got our first non-bill mail at the space, this holiday card from our friends at NYC Resistor which quickly became the first non-informative-sign we taped to the wall. Speaking of NYCR, they just put up a great post on their blog reflecting on the last year, and looking towards the next. While we still have a few details we’re trying to get sorted out (connectivity at the space being the most noteworthy) this is a great thing for us to keep in mind as we approach our first real month of existence. Thanks everyone for making this possible, I can’t believe how far we’ve come in in the last 2 months!
